Colorado 14ers

A fourteener refers to peaks that are more than 14,000 feet above sea level. Colorado has 58 fourteeners, and 700+ thirteeners. There is a club for people who summit all of them. I would like to join this club. Also I would like to visit Alma/Leadville, the highest altitude town in the US. They have an annual race called the Leadville 100, which I would love to watch.

Today was a powder day, a day following a snowy night, making snow conditions fluffy, like you are floating. Besides making snow angels and sledding, I had to shovel the driveway and walkway at our vacation rental.  Tomorrow we’ll likely go snowshoeing, forecast is another foot of snow.

I like Colorado for long term visiting, like a summer but I don’t want to go to school here. It’s not that I don’t like it here, but I would need a car, and I am not ready to invest in one.

Playing in the snow

I mostly ate snow today, sledding head first down the hill but it was worth it.  We rented snowshoes too from Mountain Shop ($5/day).

We wanted to rent a sled but the salesperson said they were sold out.  I encouragingly said to him, surely you have a sled lying around that you don’t use, that we can borrow.  Pointing to Marissa’s son, they are from Texas and it’s his first time in the snow and we just want him to experience sledding.  He went to the back and found a sort of ok sled that he started to duct tape together.  He said you can use this and I won’t charge you for it.  Great.  I’m glad I still have some sales skills in me.

Also seen in the park: mule deer, elk (no photo) and a fox.
