I struggled today with an ethical question. How do you give care and provide support when you don’t want to? A woman was in the ER today who was high on cocaine, drunk and pregnant. The doctors considered her a danger to herself too, so she had a security guard posted next to her. I know I’ve seen this exact question on a nursing school application, how do you provide care when everything in this situation is wrong? I am glad I was only observing, it felt personally painful. How could she be ruining her child’s life when it is too young to not have choices in caring for itself? The choices she is making will hurt the child in growth, development, and health. It will not grow to be strong, and may not grow at all.
