I went to an info session given by a different mountaineering group to learn a little more about this climb I signed up for since I have missed every conference call with my group because I have been out of the country. I came to a realization after the session I will be mountaineering in winter. Ice axes, crampons, climbing harness, snow shoes and avalanche beacons required. It is not a technical climb but the winter conditions will make it more challenging than I initially thought, snow will be at the base of the mountain. I was thinking spring conditions at base and winter conditions at summit since the climb is in April. Silly me.
The Mt. Whitney climb is strenuous, 22 miles round trip (35 kilometers), 8,000-14,496 ft elevation (2,400-4,400 meters).
